MISSION STATEMENTIt is the purpose of the Newport Parks & Recreation Department to provide the Citizens of Newport City, with a broad selection of recreational opportunities and leisure time activities. The Department strives to enhance the quality of life in local communities and to develop and maintain future programs and facilities as needed. Recreation is fun for all!

Call the office 334-6345 REGISTRATIONRegistration for all programs are encouraged through the mail or online. Walk in registrations are accepted at the Rec. Dept. office. All programs are available to City of Newport residents at a discounted rate, and to residents of surrounding communities at a slightly higher fee.
NEWPORT SENIOR CENTERLocated on the bottom floor of the City of Newport Municipal Building, the Center is a place to meet new friends, socialize and exercise. Brenda Landry, Director of the Senior Center, puts on a delicious meal every Wednesday at Noon for Seniors 50+ and the cost is $3.00 per person. Every Tues. & Fri. from 9:30-10:30am is the Strong Living Exercise program, which welcomes new participants. Call Brenda at 334-6029 with questions. The Annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Wed., Nov. 15th. A traditional turkey feast will be served at 12:00 Noon, including homemade pies for dessert. A small fee will be charged, no reservations necessary. The Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon will be held on Saturday Dec. 2nd at the Senior Center. Crafters will display and sell their goods from 9am-2pm. Lunch will be served starting at 11:30am that day. Come shop and support your local Senior Center. Our Christmas Dinner will be held on Wed. Dec. 20th and will be the last meal before the holidays. We will close for the remainder of the year and reopen Jan. 3rd. The Newport Senior Center Quilt Raffle is now! Tickets for our handmade quilt will be on sale with a winner drawn on Dec. 13th. Ticket sales will benefit the Senior Center and are available by calling 334-6029 or 334-6345.
2007GATEWAY CENTER PARTIES/EVENTS RESERVE NOW!- Attention to all who would like to Reserve the Gateway for any Summer or Fall event. The Gateway is a beautiful spot for your special event. If you haven’t check it out, you need to take a trip over and see Robert or Jan to schedule the facility for receptions, birthday parties, showers, retirement parties, family gatherings etc. It’s a great spot, well worth your occasion.
CARNIVAL TIME IN NEWPORT-The Miller Amusement Carnival will be in town Thurs. June 7-10 at Gardner Park. Rides, games, food concessions, Ice Cream and Fun! Fireworks Show will be on Sat. June 9th @ 9:39pm. Mark your calendar, don’t miss the great show and fun at the Carnival.
DANCING AT THE BEACHCome learn to 2-step or Partner Dance. Beginner Lessons offered by Curt & Sandy Walker, Prouty Beach Campground Hosts, on Fridays beginning June 15th from 7-8pm, and will continue every other Friday until August 24th. Open Dancing from 8-10pm at the Prouty Beach Picnic Shelter, please check in at the Ticket Booth. Open to all. $5 Donation. See you there!
TRACK & FIELD PROGRAM-Boys and girls ages 7-14 will have an opportunity to train for Track and Field events: Shotput, discus, softball throw, long jump, hurdles, high jump, sprints and long distance running events. There will be two track meets-Hershey Meet- July 7th, and the VRPA State meet July 21st. Emphasis is on fun and learning the sport. Coached by Tracey Lamoureux. Tues & Thurs. 9-11am, NCUHigh School Track, June 12-24th. Call the Recreation Dept to register.
TENNIS LESSONS- Begins Mon. June 25-Aug 3. For ages, times and dates call Gary at 334-2645 between 7-9pm or Newport Recreation Dept. 334-6345.
TENNIS CAMP- An instructional two week tennis camp for boys & girls ages 5 & older for all skill levels will be offered by the Newport Recreation Dept. Camp I will meet from 9am-Noon Mon. June 11-15th, and Camp II will meet June 18-Thurs. 22 from 9am-12 Noon at Prouty Beach Tennis Courts. Reserve now, limited number of slots available.

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAYS: 6-8:30pm Supervised Open Gym for Pickup Basketball Games & Balcony Games (including Ping Pong, Foosball, Air Hockey, Arcade Games, Cable TV& Snacks for purchase. Drop In Fee or Pass Required. (Closed Dec. 13th)

SPECIAL EVENTS
DRIVERS, START YOUR ENGINES- Exciting, thrilling fun for young and old! Race Radio Controlled Cars around the track and see if you can beat your friends and family! Demo Races, sponsored by the Newport Recreation Dept & RC Toy Box Hobbies and Tracks LLC from St. Johnsbury, will be held Sunday Nov. 12th from 2-4pm at the Newport Municipal Building. Free Admission. Toy Rockets and planes will also be displayed and available for purchase (early Christmas shopping done easy). Come see the what fun you can have!
WINTER TREE ID- Sat. Nov 18th 1-3pm at the Municipal Building. Leaf Shapes are by far the most common way to identify a tree, but there are many other characteristics one can use. Since our deciduous trees are without leaves for half the year, it is worthwhile learning tree features like buds, bark, branch geometry, odor and more. Ecologist Jason Brueck, from Siskin Ecological Adventures, will begin the day with a brief introduction inside and then head outdoors for an early winter walk. Dress warm and bring a hand lens if you have one. Cost is $8.00 Res. $10.00 Non-Res. Pre-Register please. 334-6345.
ADIRONDACK CHAIR BUILDING WORKSHOP- Sat. Dec. 9th 9am-3pm at the Municipal Building. Designed for the beginning woodworker, this program will allow participants to gain experience, build confidence and develop basic woodworking skills as they start with a pile of unfinished boards and turn them into a beautiful Adirondack chair. All materials and equipment are provided. Each participant will finish with a self-made cedar Adirondack chair to take home. Cost is $65.00 Res., $70.00 Non-Res. And space is limited. Sponsored by the Newport Recreation Dept and Siskin Ecological Adventures. Pre-registration and a $30 Deposit required by Dec.6th 334-6345
SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN- Sat. Dec. 10th Sponsored by Newport Recreation Dept and Waterfront Cinemas. Santa Claus 3 will be shown at 10am at Waterfront Cinemas, a visit with Santa to follow the movie then, Free Horse Drawn Wagon Rides through Gardner Park to follow by Mississquoi Stables from Newport Center. Movie admission is Free up to age 11, 12 and older $2.00 each.
CHRISTMAS BREAK ACTIVITIES- Tues. Dec. 26th & Thurs. Dec. 28th- 8:30am-4pm Boys & girls in grades 1-6 can stay the day and enjoy supervised structured activities and events with indoor & outdoor sports, games, sliding & skating weather permitting and more with Rec. Dept. staff.. $25per day/per child or $45 for both days. Pre-register by Dec. 20th Space is limited. Wed. Dec. 27th & Thurs. Dec. 29th- 8:30am-4pm Boys & girls in grades 1-6 can stay the day and enjoy woodworking projects, indoor and outdoor supervised activities and games with Jason & Annie Brueck from Siskin Ecological Adventures. $25 per day/per child or $45 for both days. Pre-register by Dec. 20th Space is limited. Tues. Dec. 26th 10am Movie at Waterfront Cinema $2.50 admission (Movie to be announced)
FRICTION FIRE- Wed Jan 10th 6:30-8:30pm. Steve Dessinger from Boulder Outdoor Survival School and Siskin Ecological Adventures will be teaching his expertise in the art of fire making. In this workshop, participants will learn about a variety of fire-by-friction techniques, and then focus on starting a fire using a bow-drill, which you will construct and take home with you. This course is sponsored by Newport Recreation Dept. and Siskin Ecological Adventures and will be held in the Newport Municipal Building. Cost is $10 Res. and $15 Non-Res. PROGRAMSSATURDAYS: 1-2pm Mighty Mites Gym Soccer League-Boys & girls ages 5-7 to learn dribbling & control skills then play games each week, with emphasis on fun! KIDS NIGHT OUT-Boys & girls in grades 4-6th are welcome to participate in organized team sports and/or board games from 7-8pm and karoke/dance from 8-9pm. Sports will vary from week to week with everyone participating in a supervised game. Gym Soccer, Wiffleball, Kickball, Beach-ball Volleyball, Scrabble, Checkers, Board games and Card games just to name a few. Cost is $2.00 per student. Next Kids Night Out- Dec. 1st- Wiffleball will be the sport. Karoke will be age appropriate music and lyrics.(Anyone with karoke music/lyrics that would be suitable is welcome to bring it to the Dept) J
YOUTH DANCES-Students in grades 7-8 only. Dances will be held in the Municipal Building on Fridays 7-9pm, Nov. 10, Dec. 8 and Jan 5 and more to follow. Come have fun meet your friends and dance to music by Double Trouble. Cost is $3.50 per person Dress & Behavior Code Policy-same as Newport City Elem. School. We are looking for chaperones to help with these dances.
TEEN DANCES- Students in 9-12 grades only. Friday nights from 7:30-10pm Nov. 17th. Held at the Municipal Building the cost is $4.00 per person. Music is provided by Double Trouble. Great place to meet friends and have a fun night out.
PRESCHOOL PLAYGROUP- (Formerly known as Playworld). Mon.,Wed., & Fri. 9:30-11:00am Preschoolers can bring their families to come play together in a supervised group setting using all of our fun equipment, toys, mats and structures. Snack and juice is provided. The Playgroup is funded by Success by Six and coordinated by the Newport Recreation Dept.
ICE RINK OPENING- Weather permitting the skating/hockey rinks will be open at Gardner Park during Mid-December, with times and dates to be announced through local media and schools. Use of the rinks is FREE to all, donations are gladly accepted. Skates and Helmets are available for use for kids and adults. What better way to spend the day or night than to come for fun and exercise with friends and families. Enjoy a lighted skating area, heated building, supervised activity, snacks and refreshments for purchase right here in Newport. Phone use $.50 per call.
